Ganapati is called Vishnesvara because he is the god who removes (or creates) all obstacles on the path. He has the power to get anything done without any obstructions and also has the power to put obstacles in the path of anything being done. Therefore, it is customary to worship Ganapati at the very commencement of any action so that it may reach its completion without any hindrance. It is believed that actions begun with such worship will be duly completed. In support of that belief the following story from the 6th taranga of Lavanakalambakam, Kathasaritsagara is quoted.
"The devas (demigods) decided to appoint Subrahamanya as chief of the army to kill Rarakasura. When Indra took up a pot of water purified by mantras to anoint Subrahmanya's head, his hands became benumbed, and he stood aghast. Then Siva said that any action begun without worshipping Ganapati would meet with such obstacles. At once Indra worshipped Ganapati and his hands recovered from their paralyzed condition. Thus, Subrahamanya was duly anointed with the purified water."
