There are different versions concerning Radha's appearance on earth.

  1. She was born in Gokula as the daughter of Vrsabhanu and Kalavati.
  2. She was born as Bhumi-kanya when King Vrsabhanu was preparing the ground to conduct a Yajna (sacrifice).
  3. She was born from the left side of Krsna.
  4. At the time of Krsna's birth, He asked his attendants to appear on earth. Accordingly Radha, His dear consort, appeared in Gokula under the star Jyestha in the morning of Suklastami day in Bhadrapada month.

Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayana Maharaja further explains:

In one kalpa Radhika appears from the womb of Kirtida devi. In another kalpa in Raval, She appears on a lotus in the Yamuna. Vrsabhanu Maharaja used to take bath in the Yamuna in the early morning at 4:00 a.m. One day he saw a very beautiful lotus flower on which a little baby girl was lying. Her bodily effulgence was so beautiful, with a golden hue. She was sometimes laughing, crying, putting her toe in her mouth, and moving Her little arms and legs. He looked around him and seeing that no one was there, he took the little girl and gave Her to his wife, Kirtida Sundari. At that time they only had one son, Sridam, but no daughter. Vrsabhanu Maharaja saw Her first, therefore he had so much love for Her, more than Kirtida.

When Narada Muni saw that Krsna had taken birth in Gokula he thought that Krsna's sakti must also appear very soon and he was searching everywhere. Then one day he came to the courtyard of Vrsabhanu Maharaja and asked him if he had any baby. Yes, he had one son. No daughter? Narada asked. Yes, just one daughter has been born also. Then Narada wanted to see Her. Vrsabhanu Maharaja showed him the girl and Narada said that he should bring some auspicious items like camphor, sandalwood, durva-grass etc. for offering.

When Vrsabhanu Maharaja went, Narada Muni took the opportunity to be alone with Sri Radhika and he offered many stavas and sthuties. Then Sri Radhika appeared to him as a kishori, so beautiful, decorated with so many types of mood ornaments and wearing a red skirt and blue veil. Narada offered more prayers and Lalita appeared. She told him to quickly ask for any benediction before She would disappear. Just when he was about to ask a benediction, Vrsabhanu Maharaja returned and She again assumed the form of a baby girl.
