Indra is demigod who supplies rain to the planets. The people of Ambadi used to perform yajna (sacrifice) every year to show favor to Indra for abundant rain. Krsna opposed this custom, saying that Govardhana Hill should be worshipped instead. The people of Ambadi, therefore, offered the Yajna arranged for Indra to Govardhana.

Angered, Indra released heavy rains on Ambadi. Krsna then held Govardhana Hill like an umbrella lest the people should suffer from the rains. The rain did not stop ever after seven days. Yet, due to Krsna's kindness the people did not suffer any hardship. Beaten at his own game, Indra sang the praises of Krsna. Devasurabhi (cow of the demigods) then appeared. He saluted Krsna and anointed him while the demigods addressed Krishna as Govinda, he who protects the cow.
