Kangra artists excel in painting night scenes. In the Gita-Govinda series there are a number of paintings in which the solemn, mysterious beauty of the night is depicted. Here is another painting of haunting beauty. Radha and Krishna are out in a dark night and they collide in the narrow village lane. In the pitch darkness nothing is visible, but they recognize each other. The painting illustrates the following doha of Bihari.
gali andheri sankari
bhau bhatabhera ani
pare pichhane paraspara
dou parasa pichhani
"In the dark and narrow lane, the lovers collide. They recognize each other by the familiar touch of each other's limbs." |
